Jimgosailing,
Kudos to Ambreen for authoring such a seemingly simple - but with underlying profundity- sharing of her childhood experience of an immigrant striving to assimilate into American culture through the pastime of camping。 You can catch NPR’s interview of her on March 30。 And can follow her on Instagram @brownpeoplecamping
Lisa D,
A beautiful outdoor adventure!

Author, activist, and founder of Brown People Camping Ambreen Tariq hopes to change that with her new picture book Fatima’s Great Outdoors。 Inspired by her own childhood experience, this wonderful picture book is all about an immigrant family’s first time camping in their local state park。We are first introduced to Fatima, the youngest daughter of the Khazi family, as she looks forward to setting off on the family camping trip after a tough week at school。 Before she knows it, she is packed into her family’s car with their camping gear, listening to Bollywood songs and eating samosas with her sister, mother, and father。 They travel to Emerald State Park, where Fatima’s confidence is bolstered by properly assembling their tent with her Papa。The camping trip reminds Fatima of treasured memories from her time in India, like when her mother caught lizards in their home and built a fire in a wood-burning stove。 Like all good things, the family’s camping trip must end, and Fatima realizes she isn’t ready to go home。 But luckily this is just the first of many adventures to come for Fatima。I absolutely love the illustrations by Stevie Lewis in Fatima’s Great Outdoors。 Her own love of nature really comes through in the way she illustrates the landscapes around the Khazi family。I also really appreciate the way Fatima’s Great Outdoors simultaneously introduces young readers to both camping and Indian culture。 Outdoors spaces are often very white and male dominated, as they are often specifically marketed to white men。 This sends the message to people of color that they don’t belong in these spaces。 The idea of introducing young children to camping through the eyes of an immigrant family shatters that negative stereotype, and it feels so refreshing。To learn more about Ambreen Tariq and her work promoting greater diversity in our public lands, please visit her website at brownpeoplecamping。com。To learn more about Stevie Lewis and her other work (including one of my personal favorites, Prince and Knight), please visit her website at chocosweete。com。Thank you so much to Kokila and Penguin Random House for providing me with a review copy of Fatima’s Great Outdoors。 This was another one of my most anticipated titles of 2021, and I am so happy to say it did not disappoint。Blog | Instagram | Facebook | Goodreads | Storygraph

Zainab,
I received an advance reader copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review。What a beautiful and heartfelt read。 I had a smile on my face the whole time :)After a long, hard week at school, Fatima Khazi is excited for the weekend。 She is off camping with her parents and her apaa。Written by Ambreen Tariq of @brownpeoplecamping; this beautifully illustrated read, shows readers a close-knit Indian immigrant family sharing the love of the outdoors。I loved the little cultural touches throughout I received an advance reader copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review。What a beautiful and heartfelt read。 I had a smile on my face the whole time :)After a long, hard week at school, Fatima Khazi is excited for the weekend。 She is off camping with her parents and her apaa。Written by Ambreen Tariq of @brownpeoplecamping; this beautifully illustrated read, shows readers a close-knit Indian immigrant family sharing the love of the outdoors。I loved the little cultural touches throughout this read; from the food they ate (samosas, aanda, paratha, shami kabab) to the memories from back home, the author has intertwined the family’s past and present life beautifully into the storyline。Through Fatima and her family, Ambreen Tariq shows the reader struggles faced by immigrant families, how that humbles them and makes them grateful for every little thing。 At the same time, she also showcases how resilient and resourceful they can be。 From learning to put up a tent (loved how the dad grumbles in Urdu), to wanting to make bacon (halal please and thank you), to starting a fire for the first time; in a heartwarming manner this book depicts how families make and build memories。Through Fatima we also see how children have a need to fit in and be accepted。 Her camping adventure gives her that opportunity。It would be remiss of me, if I were not to mention the gorgeous drawings by Stevie Lewis。 The colors depicting the beautiful outdoors, are deep and vibrant。 The pictures are so well detailed, from the way the family looks, to what they wear, to the color palette used, every detail and attribute has been given importance。Fatima’s expressions are so well done, one can feel her every emotion。Lastly, Ambreen Tariq brings her love of the outdoors and shares the beauty of nature with the readers。 “Fatima’s Great Outdoors” a heartwarming read and one that will surely be enjoyed by both adults and children。(This book goes on sale March 30th,2021) Ambreen Tariq 。。。more
Anna,
I received an advance reader copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review。Fatima feels different at school and even gets picked on for it。 But her troubles seem to melt away when she packs into the family car and helps set up camp。 A lovely look at the bond of family and the strength to do anything。 The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous!
Ms。 Yingling,
E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusI was so enthralled with the idea of a family from India going camping that I read this even though it was a picture book。 Fatima's troubles at school, her strong family ties, and her love of the outdoors would make a fantastic middle grade novel, and I would definitely purchase such a book。 The illustrations were very attractive。 Picture books don't circulate much in my library, even though I have tried to buy a few for teachers to read aloud (including the somew E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusI was so enthralled with the idea of a family from India going camping that I read this even though it was a picture book。 Fatima's troubles at school, her strong family ties, and her love of the outdoors would make a fantastic middle grade novel, and I would definitely purchase such a book。 The illustrations were very attractive。 Picture books don't circulate much in my library, even though I have tried to buy a few for teachers to read aloud (including the somewhat similar title about understanding other cultures, Laila's Lunchbox), but they still gather dust。 A must purchase for an elementary or public library。 。。。more
